The letter condemns the anti-Muslim Sharia-Free America Caucus, which they said is designed to promote legislation that discriminates against the faith tradition of American Muslims.

At the time of the original formation, Congressman Self referred to what he called a noble cause.

“Preserving the American way of life is essential to protecting civil liberties and upholding the United States Constitution. Sharia stands in direct opposition to our country and is totally anathema to the concept of individual freedom and our founding principles,” he said.

Context Corner is reaching out to Congressman Self today, to see if he has a comment in light of the letter condemning his actions.

Rod Vilhauer Clarifies Immigration Comments, Defends Sharia Concerns as Frisco Mayor Race Heats Up

As Election Day approaches, Frisco mayoral candidate Rod Vilhauer apologizes for some past comments while maintaining concerns about Sharia law, as opponent Mark Hill focuses his campaign on civility,

Context Corner

Rod Vilhauer Clarifies Immigration Comments, Defends Sharia Concerns as Election Nears

FRISCO — With Election Day approaching, the race between Frisco mayoral candidates Rod Vilhauer and Mark Hill is entering a critical final phase, with campaign messaging increasingly focused on leadership, community relations and public rhetoric.

Recent social media posts and campaign videos have drawn attention to comments Vilhauer previously made regarding immigrants and cultural issues. During a public appearance, Vilhauer acknowledged some of his past remarks and offered an apology.

“For those words, I apologize. Great leaders have to give great apologies. It was a mistake,” Vilhauer said.

While clarifying certain statements related to immigration, Vilhauer has continued to express concerns about Sharia law and its influence, a topic that has become a recurring theme throughout the campaign.

In an earlier interview with Context Corner following a mayoral forum, Vilhauer argued that his concerns center on ideology rather than religion. Those comments have generated debate among voters and community members throughout the city.

Mark Hill Highlights Civility and Stability

Vilhauer’s opponent, Mark Hill, has used the issue to contrast his own campaign message.

In a recently released campaign video, Hill emphasized respect, consistency and measured leadership.

“People seeking to lead this city should be measured in their words, respectful, and consistent at all times,” Hill said.

Hill also argued that public officials should be held accountable for their statements and that voters should evaluate candidates based on leadership style as well as policy positions.

“The city deserves leadership that is stable,” Hill added.

National Attention on a Local Race

What is typically a local municipal election has attracted attention far beyond Frisco. Discussions surrounding immigration, religious freedom, public discourse and community identity have driven significant engagement across social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Observers note that the race has become one of the most closely watched local elections in North Texas, reflecting broader conversations taking place across Texas and the country.

Election Day Approaches

As both campaigns make their final push, Frisco voters will soon decide who will lead one of Texas’ fastest-growing cities.

The outcome could shape not only city policy, but also the tone of public discourse in Frisco for years to come.

Report By: Rich Matthews (Context Corner)

Source: Context Corner interview and campaign statements.

Frisco World Cup Buzz Overshadowed by Mayor's Race & City Hall Protests | Biggest Stories This Week

As Frisco prepares for the FIFA World Cup, local politics continue to dominate headlines

Context Corner

<iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Izv4rjINdIc?rel=0&autoplay=0&showinfo=0&enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; arguing that Al-Zubi was being targeted not because of her qualifications but because of what she represents as a visible member of the community.

Educators Focus on the Message Sent to Students

Among the most emotional remarks came from educators who questioned what lesson students may take away from the controversy.

A teacher speaking at the rally emphasized that students are often encouraged to work hard, earn degrees, pursue leadership opportunities and believe that achievement will open doors. She argued that if professional accomplishments can be overshadowed by personal beliefs outside the workplace, it sends a troubling message to young people.

“What kids are learning from this is that an adult who did all the things, who achieved professional excellence and put in the work, can still have those accomplishments questioned because of personal faith.”

District Maintains Previous Position

Fort Worth ISD declined further comment on the ongoing investigation, referring media to a previously released statement.

The district stated:

“Fort Worth ISD students deserve principals who are qualified, experienced, and committed to student success. We believe personnel decisions must be based on professional merit, not on a person’s faith, race, or personal beliefs.”

What’s Next?

Supporters are encouraging residents to attend the upcoming Fort Worth ISD board meeting and participate in public comment sessions.

Whether community pressure will influence the district’s final decision regarding Al-Zubi’s status remains unclear. However, the rally demonstrated that the issue has become a significant topic of discussion among educators, faith leaders and residents across Fort Worth.

For Context Corner, BJ Lewis reports.

Election Results for Key Races

We are keeping up with the results of some of the key races in the State Primary Runoff tonight. visit

IRVING — Congressional candidate Colin Allred spoke with Context Corner reporter Rich Matthews outside a mosque in Irving, Texas, where the discussion centered on religious freedom, political rhetoric and community safety.

The interview took place during Friday prayers as visible police security surrounded the mosque, reflecting ongoing concerns about safety at places of worship across the country.

Allred said leaders should focus on bringing communities together instead of fueling division.

“We need leaders who remind us of the things we share,” Allred said during the interview.

Conversation focuses on safety and public discourse

During the interview, Matthews asked Allred about seeing police officers protecting worshippers outside the mosque.

Allred said protecting places of worship should be viewed as a shared responsibility for the entire community.

“If something happens here, it affects the entire community,” he said.

The conversation also explored concerns surrounding political rhetoric, polarization and the impact public discourse can have on communities.

Leadership and representation in North Texas

Allred also discussed his campaign for Texas’ 33rd Congressional District and described North Texas as a region shaped by diverse communities and shared values.

“There’s nothing wrong with our national discourse that can’t be fixed by what’s right with us here in North Texas,” he said.

The interview concluded with Allred emphasizing empathy, civic engagement and leadership focused on unity rather than division.

Frisco Council Meeting Erupts Over Muslim, Hindu & Jain Developments | Heated Public developments

FRISCO — A Frisco City Council meeting stretching into the early hours of Wednesday morning became the latest flashpoint in the city’s ongoing debates around growth, religion and development.

Residents packed council chambers to speak on three separate proposed developments connected to Muslim, Hindu and Jain communities. While some comments focused on practical concerns like traffic, parking and neighborhood access, other speakers delivered emotional and politically charged remarks about immigration, religion and the future identity of Frisco.

Context Corner’s BJ Lewis reported from the meeting, where tensions escalated repeatedly during public comment.

One resident who recently moved to Frisco said she was shocked by the controversy unfolding in the city.

“We’ve been hearing Frisco is such a wonderful place to be and we had no clue about this that I’m seeing here,” one speaker told council members.

Another speaker made inflammatory comments targeting religious communities, while other residents pushed back and defended Frisco’s diversity and multicultural identity.

“Frisco is a city built by neighbors from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures who chose to live together with respect,” another resident said during the meeting.

Others condemned the rhetoric heard during public comment.

“This hatred for other religions or ethnicities is absolutely senseless, disgusting and tragic,” one speaker told the council.

Residents raise practical concerns about traffic and infrastructure

Beyond the heated rhetoric, several residents raised concerns tied directly to development impacts in nearby neighborhoods.

Residents living near Lone Star Ranch asked council members to limit vehicle access points connecting nearby retail developments to residential streets, arguing increased traffic could create safety concerns.

“We are asking the council to close the connection point to the retail area, limiting it to emergency access only,” one resident said.

Concerns about parking congestion, road capacity and neighborhood traffic flow became recurring themes throughout the lengthy public meeting.

Officials clarify zoning process

City planning officials emphasized multiple times that the meeting was not a simple vote approving or rejecting religious institutions.

According to Planning and Zoning officials, zoning entitlements tied to some of the properties date back more than two decades and already permit places of worship under Frisco zoning rules.

“In all three cases, the zoning was approved more than 25 years ago,” officials explained during the meeting.

Officials also clarified that Frisco zoning ordinances do not distinguish between religions when defining places of worship.

Council members indicated staff would continue discussions with developers and residents regarding traffic mitigation, infrastructure concerns and possible project modifications before any future approvals move forward.

A broader debate unfolding in Frisco

The meeting reflects broader conversations happening across Frisco as rapid growth, demographic change and development continue reshaping the city.

While some residents expressed fears about the city’s future identity, others argued Frisco’s diversity remains one of its defining strengths.

Context Corner reporter BJ Lewis noted that despite the emotional testimony, the projects still face a lengthy process before construction could begin — leaving time for additional public input and negotiations between residents, developers and city officials.

Anti-mosque demonstration outside Frisco City Hall raises tensions one day after deadly San Diego mosque shooting

Context Corner reporter BJ Lewis witnessed police remove activist Jake Lang after a controversial anti-mosque banner was displayed outside Frisco City Hall.

Context Corner

<iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/LS5sdBVVhNA?rel=0&autoplay=0&showinfo=0&enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; and immediately drew criticism from observers who viewed the messaging and timing as inflammatory and deeply inappropriate following Monday’s deadly shooting near the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Context Corner reporter BJ Lewis was present during the incident and witnessed police escort Lang away from the area after tensions escalated surrounding the demonstration. Video recorded by Context Corner captured officers removing Lang outside City Hall while onlookers gathered nearby.

The incident comes during heightened national concern surrounding threats and violence targeting houses of worship and religious communities across the United States. Authorities in California are still investigating the deadly San Diego-area shooting, which has already intensified fears among many Muslim communities nationwide.

Supporters of Lang may argue the demonstration falls under political expression and protected speech. Critics, however, argue the messaging crossed the line from protest into provocation directed at a religious community already shaken by violence and security concerns.

The demonstration also raises broader questions about how civic spaces should respond to increasingly confrontational political activism — particularly when demonstrations involve rhetoric perceived as hostile toward minority faith communities.

For many Muslim residents across North Texas, the timing of the demonstration amplified concerns about rising anti-Muslim rhetoric and the normalization of provocative messaging targeting mosques and Islamic institutions.

As Frisco and other North Texas cities continue growing and diversifying, local governments will likely face increasing pressure balancing constitutional protections, public order and community trust.

The incident quickly spread across social media, where reactions ranged from support for free speech protections to condemnation of the banner’s messaging and timing.

No charges related to the demonstration were immediately announced Tuesday evening.

Media Photo: Denton County Sheriff’s Office

Zul Mohamed has spent the past four years living with the consequences of a decision that derailed his life, shattered his reputation, and left him fighting both the legal system and his own mental‑health challenges. Now, in a move that has surprised many in Carrollton, he is asking the community for something he has not asked for before: a second chance.

Mohamed, who pleaded guilty in 2024 to more than 100 felony counts tied to a mail‑ballot scheme during his 2020 mayoral run, is once again on the ballot for mayor this May. It’s an unusual comeback — but not an unlawful one. Because his case is still under appeal and no court has declared him mentally incapacitated, Texas law does not bar him from running, according to the Dallas Express.

The City of Carrollton will hold a General Council & Special Election for Bond Propositions on May 2, 2026.

For Mohamed, the campaign is less about political ambition and more about personal repair. Those close to him describe a man who has spent years in therapy, grappling with a delusional disorder that his defense attorney argued played a central role in his actions. A jury agreed he needed treatment, not just punishment, sentencing him to a combination of probation, community service, and four years in state prison.

A Mistake That Became a Spiral

The Express reports that the events that led to Mohamed’s arrest in 2020 began with a box of mail ballots traced to a commercial mailbox he had rented under a false identity. Investigators caught the scheme early; no fraudulent ballots were ever cast. But the damage — to the election system, to public trust, and to Mohamed’s own life — was already done.

After years of legal wrangling, Mohamed pleaded guilty to 84 counts of fraudulent use of a mail‑ballot application and 25 counts related to possessing other voters’ ballots. He later told reporters he felt pressured into the plea, a claim now wrapped into his ongoing appeal.

His legal troubles deepened when investigators linked him to fake jury‑duty notices sent to dozens of Denton County residents, said the Express. Mohamed now faces six additional felony charges of impersonating a public servant. He is out on bond and awaiting a May 14 court date.

A Community Watching — And a Man Hoping

Despite the controversy, Mohamed insists he is committed to rebuilding trust. His 2026 campaign is modest — he has spent only $285 of his own money — and he faces incumbent Mayor Steve Babick in a race overshadowed by his past.

Denton County Elections Administrator Frank Phillips says the county is aware of Mohamed’s candidacy and will apply its highest security protocols to ensure a fair process for all candidates.

Mohamed, who received about 20% of the vote in 2020, knows the road back is steep. But he says he is running not to erase his past, but to show he is more than the worst thing he has done.

“I’m trying to make things right,” he told supporters privately. “I want to be better than the man I was.”

A Second Chance — In the Hands of Voters

Carrollton voters will decide whether Mohamed’s story is one of irredeemable failure or hard‑earned redemption. His name will appear on the May 2 ballot alongside three City Council races and five bond propositions totaling $235 million. Early voting runs April 20–28.

For now, Mohamed continues therapy, continues appealing his case, and continues asking the city he once disappointed to see him as a whole person — flawed, accountable, and trying to start again.

Explainer: Why the Islamabad Talks Matter — and What They Reveal About Shifting Photo: FreePic

The Islamabad negotiations come six weeks after coordinated US–Israel strikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggered a multi‑front regional war. The conflict has:

Shut down or severely restricted the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil normally flows.

Driven energy prices to record highs and rattled global markets.

Sparked simultaneous fighting in Lebanon, Israel, and the Gulf.

A Pakistan‑mediated two‑week ceasefire is in place but already under strain due to conflicting interpretations of its terms.

For policymakers, this is not simply a bilateral dispute — it is a crisis affecting global energy security, maritime law, and the balance of power in the Middle East.

Who Is at the Table — and Why It Matters

The delegations are unusually senior:

United States: Vice President JD Vance leads the team, joined by senior envoys.

Iran: Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf heads Tehran’s delegation.

Pakistan: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is mediating trilateral sessions.

This configuration signals:

Washington’s recognition that the conflict is spiralling beyond military containment.

Tehran’s belief that it has leverage, especially over the Strait of Hormuz.

Islamabad’s emergence as a middle‑power broker is enabled by personal diplomatic relationships and geographic positioning.

The Core Issues on the Table

a) The Strait of Hormuz — the central fault line

Iran wants:

Recognition of its authority over the waterway

The right to charge transit fees

Limits on US naval activity

The US wants:

Full reopening of the strait

No Iranian tolls or restrictions

Freedom of navigation for oil tankers

This is the single most contentious issue, with both sides “very far apart.”

b) Lebanon and the regional battlefield

Iran insists the ceasefire must include a halt to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
The US and Israel reject this linkage.

c) Sanctions and frozen assets

Tehran demands the release of frozen funds and sanctions relief.
Washington denies having agreed to this and frames any relief as contingent on nuclear and missile concessions.

d) Nuclear and missile programs

Iran wants freedom to continue enrichment.
Trump has declared this “not up for negotiation.”

e) US military presence

Iran wants a withdrawal commitment.
The US insists forces will remain until a deal is reached.

Global Economic Stakes

The war has already:

Pushed oil cargo prices above $140 per barrel as refiners scramble for supply.

Triggered refinery slowdowns in Europe and Asia.

Created fears of a 1 percentage point hit to global growth if conflict continues.

For policymakers, the talks are as much about economic stabilization as conflict de‑escalation.

What These Talks Reveal About Shifting Power Dynamics

Pakistan as a pivotal mediator

Islamabad has positioned itself as the only actor trusted enough — or neutral enough — to host both delegations. This reflects a broader trend: middle powers stepping into diplomatic vacuums left by great‑power fatigue.

Iran’s confidence

Tehran believes it has already “won” strategically by:

Surviving the initial US–Israel strikes

Leveraging Hormuz to exert global pressure

Maintaining influence in Lebanon and the Gulf

This shapes its hardline negotiating posture.

US strategic recalibration

Washington is balancing:

The need to reopen Hormuz

The desire to avoid a wider regional war

Domestic political pressure to appear tough

This produces a dual message: openness to talks, but threats of escalation if diplomacy fails.

What to Watch Next — Key Indicators for Policymakers

Whether the US and Iran agree on a phased reopening of Hormuz

If Lebanon becomes a formal part of the ceasefire framework

Signals of sanctions flexibility from Washington

Iran’s willingness to discuss nuclear or missile limits

Pakistan’s ability to maintain momentum as a mediator.

Any movement on these fronts would indicate a shift from crisis management to genuine de‑escalation.

Muslim Texans Push Back as GOP Leaders Reject Islam Content in Social‑Studies

Advocates warn Tuesday’s State Board of Education meeting, GOP speakers rallied behind the draft revisions to the Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills （TEKS）, praising the emphasis contributions.

“Christian influences are prevalent throughout the founding documents and writings of the founding fathers. If approved, the new standards would shape instruction beginning in the 2030 school year.

Republican activists, including SBOE candidate Victoria Hinojosa and conservative organizer Abraham George, framed their support as a defense against ideological influence. “Our children deserve the truth — the Judeo‑Christian values that founded this nation,” George wrote on may be continuing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that are prohibited under state law.

In a statement announcing the probe on April 10, Paxton said investigators will review whether UNT continues to teach DEI concepts and directs employees to follow policies barred by Texas law for state-funded institutions.

According to the Dallas Express, the inquiry follows an undercover video circulating online that appears to show a field education coordinator in the university’s social work department describing how DEI-related material is taught without using explicit terminology and suggesting ways staff could avoid triggering legal restrictions, according to Paxton’s office.

Paxton said he sent a letter to the dean of UNT’s College of Public Affairs and Community Service seeking an explanation of the employee’s statements, a description of the university’s compliance measures, copies of DEI-related policies or guidance, information on any DEI requirements tied to accreditation, and communications between leaders and staff on the topic.

In his announcement, Paxton criticized DEI efforts and called for the staff member shown in the video to be fired, saying any attempt to circumvent the state’s ban should result in “immediate termination.”

DEI supporters, including some faculty and student advocates, condemned the investigation as a politicized attack on academic programs and said efforts to support first-generation students, students with disabilities and other underrepresented groups could be chilled by enforcement actions. Representatives for those groups urged the university to be transparent about what is taught and how it aligns with state law.

The investigation is the latest in a series of disputes over DEI in Texas higher education.

In 2024, media reports said several universities, including UNT, reviewed job postings and internal guidance that referenced diversity and inclusion language after questions were raised about compliance. Paxton’s office also scrutinized UNT last year over its response to campus incidents involving student speech and safety

Muslim Advocate Official Website

A Muslim advocate has urged the Texas State Board of Education on April 9, 2026, to revise portions of a proposed social studies curriculum, arguing that several passages present “unfair and misleading portrayals” of Islam.

Speaking during a public hearing in Austin, the advocate, Shaimaa Zayan, said the draft standards emphasize extremism while overlooking the historical, cultural, and scientific contributions of Muslim civilizations. She warned that such framing could deepen bias in classrooms and make Muslim students feel targeted.

“This curriculum, as written, risks teaching children to fear their Muslim classmates,” she told board members. “We are asking for accuracy, balance, and the same respect afforded to other faith traditions.”

The testimony came as educators, parents, and advocacy groups debated the state’s first major curriculum overhaul in more than a decade. Supporters of the revisions say they aim to strengthen civic literacy, while critics argue that the changes reflect political pressure rather than academic consensus.

Board members did not indicate whether they would amend the sections in question, but several said they welcomed continued public input before the final vote later this year.

Community, Interfaith Leaders to hold Rally Demanding Release of Ya’akub Ira Vijandre

Press conference set Photo: Supplied

Community members, advocacy organizations, attorneys and interfaith leaders plan to hold a press conference Thursday, April 16, outside the Dallas ICE Field Office.

The planned action is to call for the immediate release of Ya’akub Ira Vijandre, who supporters say has been detained for six months because of his political beliefs.

Scheduled for 11 a.m. in front of the Dallas ICE Field Office at 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, this is another rally to call for his release.

Organizers said Vijandre was taken to the Dallas ICE office immediately after what they describe as an unlawful arrest at gunpoint on Oct. 7, 2025, and has remained in custody since.

Organizers point to a recent removal order issued by Immigration Judge Blake Doughty, which they say relied on an unconstitutional finding that Vijandres ideology could justify detention and deportation. In the order, the judge wrote that the court reasonably concludes respondents belief in their innocence is based on ideological affinity when discussing Vijandres view of several terrorism-related convictions referenced in the decision.

The ruling also cited Vijandres social media posts referring to incarcerated individuals including the Holy Land Foundation 5, Aafia Siddiqui and the Fort Dix 5 as “political prisoners”. Supporters said the decision wrongly treats calls for due process, fundraising for legal defense, and advocacy for exoneration as material support conduct they argue is protected by the First Amendment.

“Ya’akubs case impacts the right of every person in this country to criticize the genocide or any other American government policy,” said attorney Eric Lee, who represents Vijandre in federal habeas litigation.

“This case has to be a line in the sand,” Lee added, arguing that Vijandre, who has lived and worked in the United States for nearly 20, “is entitled to the same free-speech protections as U.S. citizens”, citing longstanding Supreme Court precedent including Bridges v. Wixon, 326 U.S. 135, 148 (1945).

Organizers said they are urging “people of conscience” to attend the April 16 news conference and continue pressing ICE to release Vijandre.

The gathering will take place at 11 a.m. outside the Dallas ICE Field Office on N. Stemmons Freeway.

Frisco City Council delays public comment overhaul until after May 2 election

Council Texas Governor’s Mansion is trending again—this time not for the diyas, sweets, or speeches, but for the political firestorm it has been pulled into.

The clip is from November 3, 2024, when Gov. Greg Abbott welcomed South Asian guests to Austin for Diwali, according to a report by The Dallas Express.

In early April 2026, it resurfaced across social media alongside arguments about H-1B visas, Indian immigration, and the cultural politics that often follow both.

In the video, Abbott says: “As long as I’m governor of this great state, Texas will be a land for the Indian community… and we will continue to celebrate Diwali here in the great state of Texas.”

Supporters shared it as a sign of inclusion. Critics recirculated it as a jab at leaders they link—fairly or not—to foreign-worker hiring and the H-1B system.

The renewed attention comes as the U.S. visa program once again becomes a proxy battleground for bigger questions: skills and wages, corporate hiring, and who benefits from global mobility. Against that backdrop, Abbott’s press office was asked whether the governor’s Diwali remarks amounted to support for the very system his critics blame.

In a statement on April 7, Abbott Press Secretary Eduardo Leal said the anger is misdirected because visa policy is controlled by Washington, not state governors. “Any criticism towards Governor Abbott about immigration visa issues are misdirected,” Leal said. “Let’s be clear: the federal government has exclusive purview and is solely responsible over immigration visa policy, including H-1B visas.”

Leal added: “The Governor does not have the authority to approve or deny visas for any private business.” That distinction matters for Indian professionals who follow U.S. immigration debates closely: state leaders can shape the tone of community outreach, but they do not run the federal pipeline that issues H-1B approvals.

At the same time, Leal said Abbott has tried to limit H-1B use where Texas does have leverage—inside state government. He pointed to a January directive ordering Texas agencies and public universities to freeze new H-1B petitions. “What Governor Abbott has done is take decisive action within Texas’ authority,” Leal said, arguing the private sector should “prioritize American workers for American jobs.”

Others in local Texas politics have made the same point. Frisco City Councilman Burt Thakur has previously described H-1B as “a USCIS issue,” outside local government authority—underscoring how quickly diaspora celebrations can be swept into national policy fights decided far from state capitols.

Federal numbers help explain why this debate lands so sharply with Indian audiences: USCIS data show more than 70% of approved H-1B petitions in fiscal year 2023 were for beneficiaries born in India. Leal said Abbott is urging Congress and the White House to tighten federal rules and crack down on abuse. But the viral Diwali clip shows a parallel truth: in the U.S., a festival built around light can be replayed online as political ammunition—long after the lamps have gone out.

Texas students tell education board: Put inclusion over politics in social studies rewrite

Testifying in Critics also object to the outsized role of a nine-member advisory panel — most without Texas K-12 classroom experience and some with ties to conservative activism — arguing that early drafts elevate rote memorization and oversimplify complex events.

Students told the board the overhaul leans too heavily on Western civilization, gives inadequate attention to the histories of people of color and women, and places Christianity above other major world religions. Several said they want lessons that confront the “good, bad and ugly” of the past — and they want more time and more public input before the board votes.

“We know when something is being left out,” said Caiden Davis, a high school junior from Humble. “What we need from our schools isn’t a watered-down version of history. We need the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it challenges us.”

“We know when something is being left out,” said Caiden Davis, a high school junior from Humble. “What we need from our schools isn’t a watered-down version of history. We need the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it challenges us.”

Houston student Zayra Espinoza urged the board to avoid omission and instead “focus on supporting teachers, investing in students and ensuring classrooms remain spaces for learning, not political control.”

Sixth-grader Jomeyra Sharif said students need to see themselves in the curriculum because “everyone deserves to be represented.” “Schools should do more to promote equality, respect different cultures, and making all students feel included,” she said, “so they can be proud to be American.”

The board is set to finalize the standards in June, and meetings have grown more contentious as the deadline approaches.

Democrats on and around the board have pushed for frank depictions of slavery and the contributions of people of color, while many Republicans have argued for emphasizing American exceptionalism and Christianity. Teachers have also criticized early drafts as rushed and said political actors are crowding out classroom expertise.

Students asked for more coverage of women, Hispanic and Black histories, as well as topics often treated as peripheral — from African kingdoms to the Middle East — and for standards that leave room for discussion and debate.

Seventh-grader Gannon Davis Keener, also from Humble, warned that when students are asked only to identify and describe events, “that means less analyzing, less questioning, and less discussion.”

“I want to learn history in a way that challenges me to think, not just remember,” Keener said. “I respectfully ask that you slow down and allow teachers and parents a greater role in revising these standards.”

U.S. and Iran Enter Fragile Two‑Week Truce as Texas Democrats Warn of Escalation

Temporary agreed to a two‑week ceasefire aimed at easing a rapidly escalating confrontation in the Persian Gulf, a move welcomed internationally but met with caution at home. The truce follows days of heightened rhetoric, including President Donald Trump’s warning that “a whole civilization will die” if Iran refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Announcing the pause, Trump said the agreement marked “a big day for world peace,” adding that Iran “has had enough and wants to step back from the brink.” He described the ceasefire as an opportunity for negotiators to “work toward something lasting.”

Iranian officials, however, framed the deal as a tactical decision rather than a breakthrough. A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country “does not seek war, but will respond decisively to any aggression,” emphasizing that the ceasefire “should not be mistaken for weakness.”

In Texas, several Democratic lawmakers said the president’s earlier comments contributed to the crisis and raised concerns about his judgment. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas said Trump’s remarks were “reckless and destabilizing,” while Rep. Julie Johnson argued that the situation “requires steady, diplomatic leadership, not threats of mass destruction.”

The ceasefire is expected to hold for 14 days while diplomats prepare for talks in Islamabad. Analysts warn that the agreement remains fragile, with both sides maintaining military readiness and regional tensions still high.
