“I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.”

With those words, Bo French, candidate for Railroad Commissioner sparked a controversy at the University of Texas. He was referring to video he shot of what he said was a heavy congregation of south Asian UT students celebrating the team’s victory over Ohio State.

People from all over the country have criticized French’s comments. In a reaction, French has double downed on his statement.

Who was impacted the most? Likely, it was the students themselves. Context Corner Managing Editor Sam Moore spoke with Nethra Middela, a senior majoring in Computer Science. As she said, the students wondered who this guy was, and why was he saying these things.

North Texas mosques prepared for possible protests on September 11, but at several locations, Muslim worshippers were met by supporters and neighbors instead.

From McKinney and Allen to Plano, residents gathered outside mosques as police maintained increased security. Some protesters were present, while supporters outnumbered them at several locations.

Neighbors spoke about standing with their Muslim community members, while mosque members said they were grateful for the support. In Plano, police said increased patrols would continue at mosques and churches.

Dallas- A protest surrounding the Republican National Convention in downtown Dallas escalated as protesters and counterprotesters confronted each other, resulting in the detention of two members of the community defense organization known as the CLB.

According to this report by Ariell Chilcote, Dallas police detained the two CLB members following allegations that they assaulted counterprotesters. Police also said the individuals blocked the road and reported that the alleged victim did not require medical treatment.

The march was organized by the DFW Anti-War Committee and Indivisible Dallas, with organizers estimating approximately 450 people in attendance. Demonstrators voiced opposition to the Trump administration’s policies, including its war and deportation agendas.

The report follows the escalation between protesters and counterprotesters during the march, including an incident involving CLB member Doberman. The report also provides background on Doberman, including a previous FBI and Secret Service raid connected to an investigation into the alleged UFC Freedom 250 bomb plot. No charges were known to have been filed against Doberman following that raid, according to the report.

The CLB describes itself as a defensive community organization focused on community education, mutual aid and Second Amendment rights. The group disputes the characterization of Doberman as its leader, saying it operates through a democratic process.

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the memories of that day remain deeply etched into the American consciousness.

But Rich Matthews asks Americans to remember not only 9/11, but also what followed.

In the days after the attacks, Americans came together across political, racial and religious differences. Republicans and Democrats put politics aside, communities supported one another, and countries around the world stood with the United States.

Safa Ahmed, board member with Indian American Muslim Council, plans to join others in protesting the event. She tells Context Corner why.NEW YORK / DALLAS-FORT WORTH — Mohan Bhagwat’s U.S. visit is drawing sharply different reactions across Indian-American communities, with protests organizing in New York and supporters and critics debating what the visit represents in places such as North Texas.

Speaking with Context Corner’s Sam Moore from New York, Safa Ahmed of the Indian American Muslim Councilsaid she plans to protest Bhagwat’s visit.

“I stand with humanity and justice for all,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed said her opposition is rooted in concerns about human rights, religious freedom and the treatment of minorities in India.

Bhagwat leads the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, one of India’s most influential Hindu nationalist organizations. Supporters describe the RSS as a cultural and volunteer movement focused on Hindu society, service and national renewal. Critics argue that its ideology has contributed to an increasingly hostile environment for Muslims, Christians and other minorities in India.

The debate surrounding Bhagwat’s visit has extended well beyond New York.

Within the DFW Indian community, supporters and critics have been discussing the visit and the broader controversy surrounding the RSS. Some see Bhagwat as an important cultural and national figure whose organization is frequently misunderstood. Others view his appearance as an opportunity to raise concerns about Hindu nationalism, religious freedom and minority rights.

Those competing perspectives reflect a larger divide within the Indian diaspora over the direction of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the growing influence of the RSS.

Ahmed told Context Corner that her decision to protest is not simply about one religious community.

Her message, she said, is about standing against injustice regardless of who is affected.

The controversy also underscores an important distinction: criticism of the RSS or Bhagwat is not the same as criticism of Hinduism or Hindu Americans. At the same time, supporters of Bhagwat argue that the RSS is often unfairly portrayed and deserves the opportunity to present its own message directly to American audiences.

That debate is now playing out in the United States.

And as Bhagwat’s visit continues, Indian-American communities from New York to Dallas-Fort Worth are having their own conversations about what his presence represents.

McKinney City Council meeting took a noticeably different turn from the previous session as residents gathered to voice support for the council’s approval of a proposed mosque project and their Muslim neighbors.

Two weeks earlier, the majority of speakers at the meeting had opposed the project. At the latest meeting, speakers—including Muslim and Christian residents—praised the council’s decision and emphasized the importance of religious freedom and equal treatment.

Several speakers also addressed concerns surrounding Sharia law.

Evan Hunt, who is challenging Congressman Keith Self in the November election, called the debate over Sharia law a “politics of division and distraction,” pointing instead to issues such as healthcare, public schools, the war in Iran, AI regulation and data centers.

Princeton Mayor Eugene Escobar also attended the meeting. Escobar said he wanted to learn how McKinney handled the controversy as his own community considers a potential mosque project. He emphasized the importance of elected officials following the Constitution and the law.

The meeting comes as a recall petition continues in McKinney.

And he talked about his reaction when he was faced with a lady who obviously did not like what he had to say.

A packed McKinney City Hall saw hours of public comment, heated exchanges and competing views over a proposed mosque site plan on Virginia Parkway. Supporters and opponents raised questions about development, zoning, community concerns and religious freedom.

After hours of testimony, the City Council pulled the item from the consent agenda for additional discussion and presentations from city staff. Shortly before midnight, council members voted unanimously, 7-0, to move the property development forward.

This week, the American Jewish Conservatives hosted a packed public forum in North Texas to discuss the conflict, U.S. policy, Israel’s security, and concerns surrounding Sharia law. Congressman Keith Self was originally scheduled to attend but was unable to appear in person, instead providing a recorded video message for attendees.

Keith Self Addresses the Audience

In his recorded remarks, Self reaffirmed his support for Israel and outlined the organization’s stated concerns about Sharia law.

“Our goal is simple: sound the alarm about the dangers of Sharia law in America and ensure the United States Constitution remains the supreme law of our land.”

He also reiterated his support for Israel, calling it America’s greatest ally in the Middle East.

Personal Perspectives from Iran

One of the featured speakers was Abdin Vizeri, who was born in Iran and has frequently spoken publicly against the current Iranian government.

Speaking about his own experiences, Vizeri said many Iranians carry lasting trauma from living under the country’s religious leadership.

“We have this trauma from Islam. We have this crazy trauma that we have from Islam.”

His remarks reflected his personal experiences growing up in Iran and living under the country’s governing system.

Panel Discusses Sharia and National Security

Another panelist, Rabbi Pesach Wolicki, argued that Iran’s leadership represents a broader international threat while also expressing concerns about political Islam.

Throughout the evening, speakers discussed issues including national security, Western values, U.S. foreign policy, and the future of the Middle East.

Organizer Draws a Distinction

Despite the event’s criticism of Sharia law and political Islam, American Jewish Conservatives founder Benji Gochman said the organization does not view all Muslims the same.

“No one is saying that all Muslims are terrorists.”

He said the group’s focus is on what it views as concerns surrounding Sharia doctrine rather than individual Muslims.

Context Corner Will Continue Coverage

As events in the Middle East continue to evolve, discussions surrounding their impact on communities in North Texas are expected to continue as well.

Context Corner will continue following developments involving Iran, Israel, and local conversations surrounding the conflict.

When former McKinney Mayor George Fuller gave his thoughts in support of a proposed mosque expansion at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, he expected boos. However, he likely did not expect a physical confrontation.

The meeting had a procedural vote on the ongoing plans for the expansion. The expansion was actually approved two years ago. This vote was to approve that the ongoing plans by the Muslim community continued to meet the minimum standards put forth by the city.

Several hundred people either did not understand that, or didn’t care. They showed up to voice their displeasure and their hope that somehow the council members would use this opportunity to vote it down.

Among those voicing their dissent were Congressman Keith Self and State Representative Keresa Richardson. The meeting lasted well into the evening, as person after person stood up and spoke either in favor or in opposition.

Fuller was one of the early speakers. During his talk he said, “Sadly, we live in a time when some have discovered that the easiest way to gain attention or win elections is not by offering solutions, but by manufacturing fear, dividing communities, demonizing neighbors, and turning misinformation into a political strategy.”

Fuller pointed out the McKinney Islamic Association has been a part of the community for 30 years. He pointed out that the proposal had already been approved, and that this also had to be approved if it met the specifications. When he finished, he faced the audience and threw up both hands as a majority of the crowd began booing. Fuller then walked to the exit. He was confronted by the woman. Photos and videos show he had to hold her back. No injuries have been reported.

The proposal was approved unanimously, 7-0.

Council Approves Mosque Site Plan in 7-0 Vote

The McKinney City Council unanimously approved the proposed mosque site plan on Virginia Parkway following hours of public testimony from residents both supporting and opposing the project.

The meeting drew a large crowd to City Hall, with speakers raising concerns about traffic, parking, noise, and the future use of the property before council members cast a unanimous 7-0 vote.

City Staff Address Public Concerns

Before the vote, the item was removed from the consent agenda to allow additional discussion and a detailed presentation from city staff.

Officials explained the planning process behind the application and responded to questions surrounding traffic, parking, landscaping, and other development-related issues that had been raised throughout the evening.

Council Members Call for Unity and Continued Dialogue

Before the vote, District 1 Councilman Justin Beller encouraged residents not to judge their neighbors based on fear or political rhetoric.

“We should judge people by what they’ve shown us, not by fear of what might happen.”

District 3 Councilwoman Dr. Geré Feltus reminded residents that the approval represents another step in the development process—not the final one—and encouraged the public to remain engaged.

“Keep the questions coming. Keep the conversation going.”

She emphasized that additional reviews, research, and public discussion will continue as the project moves forward.

What’s Next?

While the site plan has now been approved, council members stressed that additional steps remain before the project is fully completed.

The decision marks a significant milestone in one of McKinney’s most closely watched development proposals, with community conversations expected to continue in the months ahead.
