The McKinney City Council unanimously approved the proposed mosque site plan on Virginia Parkway following hours of public testimony from residents both supporting and opposing the project.
The meeting drew a large crowd to City Hall, with speakers raising concerns about traffic, parking, noise, and the future use of the property before council members cast a unanimous 7-0 vote.
City Staff Address Public Concerns
Before the vote, the item was removed from the consent agenda to allow additional discussion and a detailed presentation from city staff.
Officials explained the planning process behind the application and responded to questions surrounding traffic, parking, landscaping, and other development-related issues that had been raised throughout the evening.
Council Members Call for Unity and Continued Dialogue
Before the vote, District 1 Councilman Justin Beller encouraged residents not to judge their neighbors based on fear or political rhetoric.
“We should judge people by what they’ve shown us, not by fear of what might happen.”
District 3 Councilwoman Dr. Geré Feltus reminded residents that the approval represents another step in the development process—not the final one—and encouraged the public to remain engaged.

She emphasized that additional reviews, research, and public discussion will continue as the project moves forward.
